Inhabiting the Extreme

EXHIBITION

Our work in Antarctica, which spans more than 20 years, has been included in the Buenos Aires Architecture Biennial within the exhibition “Inhabiting the Extreme: An Architectural Biography of Antarctica”.

Our projects for the National Antarctic Programmes of the UK, Spain and Australia are included in the show, which has been elegantly curated by Violeta and Victoria Nuviala and beautifully designed by 6044 SUR.

Often imagined as an empty white desert, Antarctica is in fact a continent shaped by more than two centuries of building. The exhibition explores this architectural history and the radical structures created to support life and research in one of the world’s most extreme environments.

Hugh Broughton Architects’ work includes Halley VI Research Station, designed for the British Antarctic Survey following an international design competition in 2005, alongside more recent projects at Rothera for the British Antarctic Survey, Juan Carlos 1 for the Spanish Ministry of Science, and Davis Station for the Australian Antarctic Division.

The exhibition brings together work by studios from Germany, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, South Korea, Poland, Ukraine and the UK, exploring how architecture developed for Antarctica can offer new approaches to materials, form, climate and the ways we might live in the future
